Switzerland Captures Individual & Team Titles at Ford

to Earn Second Place Honors for U.S. in Team Competition
MAMMOTH, Calif. (January 9, 1999) - Eight-time World Cup gold medalist and
former Olympian Daniel Mahrer held off teammate Franz Heinzer to capture
the individual title for the Swiss team today at the 1998-99 Ford Downhill
Series championship at Mammoth, Calif.
Mahrer, who earned $10,000 for the first-place finish, posted a
combined time of 2:19.45 for the day, while Heinzer, who placed first in
Friday's practice runs, finished with a combined time of 2:19.55. The pair
will pocket an additional $20,000 of the record $500,000 prize purse for
their team championship.
Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe finished third in the competition
with a combined time of 2:19.80, on the heels of his first-place finish in
the Ford Downhill Series Championship at Beaver Creek, Colo. in December
1998. Teammate Kyle Rasmussen, replacing the injured AJ Kitt, finished
fourth with a combined time of 2:20.07 to earn the U.S. team a second-place
finish in the team competition.
After three events at Aspen, Colo., Beaver Creek and Mammoth, the
Ford Downhill Series has crowned three renowned skiers with first-place
honors - World Cup champion Luc Alphand, Moe and Heinzer. Thus far, team
championships have been spread out among the Austrian, U.S. and Swiss
teams.
Ford Division takes the Downhill Series to Sugarbush, Vermont on
January 21-25, before concluding with the championship finale at Squaw
Valley, Lake Tahoe, Calif. in March There, winners of the individual and
team competitions will drive away from the sixth-annual event with new Ford
SUV's.
